Choose a safe place to store your Reinstallation Kit. |
Locate your original Windows 98 disc. |
Label the original Windows 98 disc with the 25-character Product Key and store it plus an extra copy of the Product Key in safe place. |
Locate all the installation discs for your Windows 98 applications, including copies of downloaded applications and utilities. Record any related product keys or IDs. Store all these with the Kit. |
Visit software manufacturers’ sites and grab all program updates. Store with Kit. |
Visit hardware manufacturers’ sites and grab all the most recent Windows 9x drivers. Gather together all original driver disks and place them with the rest of your Reinstallation Kit. |
Create a couple of copies of the Windows 98 start-up floppy disk and store them with your Reinstallation Kit. |
Subscribe to a drivers site so you can track down additional drivers later on. |
Gather all Microsoft’s patches and updates for Windows 98 and burn them to disc: |

- Visit Microsoft Corporate IT Managers site to gather updates and save them all to the folder.
- Visit Internet Explorer sites, obtain copies of IE and any critical updates and save them to the folder.
